The City of Port Huron has some money to work with to feed and house suffering residents. Community Development Block Grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development have been granted to the City of Port Huron. A plan to spend the $462,000 will be presented to the Mayor and City Council at the next meeting. A plan was quickly developed to use the money to meet basic needs for city residents, in collaboration with local organizations that implement vital programs. The money is planned to go toward housing and utility costs, homeless assistance, and nutrition and gardening programs. Funds will also go toward addressing the needs of small businesses impacted by the shutdown due to COVID-19, and some are intended to pay for increased COVID-19 testing. The city is working with Community Action Agency, Mid-City Nutrition, Bluewater Rescue Mission, Council on Aging, and the Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County. If approved, the funds are expected to be dispursed as soon as possible, according to a press release from City Manager, James Freed.
