Unemployed workers in Michigan will have some new help in their job search. With more than 200,000 Michiganders filing for unemployment benefits annually, a new partnership hopes to help them find jobs. The Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA), which handles unemployment benefits for Michigan workers, has teamed up with the popular job search, and “business card” type website, LinkedIn. Unemployment claimants in Michigan can now search LinkedIn’s 20 million job listings for employment. In Michigan an unemployed worker needs to show that he has searched for at least two jobs per week. The part that really makes it a good pairing with the UIA is that a search log is created for the individual. The Director of the UIA in Michigan, Steve Gray, said, The LinkedIn unemployment portal serves as an additional tool for reemployment resources along with Pure Michigan Talent Connect.” The state of Michigan is making the partnership a six-month pilot project. A spokesperson for LinkedIn said,” they have created tools and made available resources to help ensure unemployed Michiganders maintain their unemployment benefits while they look for the right job on LinkedIn.”
