To maintain social distancing and slow down the spread of COVID-19, the Governor’s most recent “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order has banned motorized boating at least until the end of April. The DNR has updated their website to answer frequently asked questions. For most of the questions, the answer is “no”. Along with no motorized boats allowed, there are no chartered fishing trips allowed, no rentals of non-motorized boats like canoes or kayaks, and no fishing tournaments. Those who fish from a canoe or kayak or from the shore still need a current fishing license and still need to report the catching of any tagged fish. If you just bought a boat, you will need to wait to transfer the title, as that can not be done online through the Secretary of State, but you can renew a boat registration. DNR boat access areas are still open, but the bathrooms and other facilities are locked. State marinas and harbors are closed. The full interpretation of the order can be found at Michigan.gv/DNR.
