The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous phone calls regarding pistol sales registration during the Coronavirus pandemic, and wants residents to know there are two ways you can register your pistol. After buying a pistol, you can send the pistol sales record to the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, on Michigan Road in Port Huron or you can drop off the sales record in a drop box that says “Pistol Sales Record.” That box is located at the front door of the Michigan Road Office at the left side of the door. To buy a gun in Michigan, you must be at least 18 years old and to buy a handgun from a federally licensed dealer, you must be at least 21. Though Michigan does not have a firearm registration system, gun sellers are required to keep records of sales and sales of handguns must be reported to law enforcement. Buying a handgun requires a purchase license, except when buying from a federally licensed dealer who runs a background check and provides a record of sale to be filed with the purchaser’s local police department.
