Today is recognized as Martin Luther King Jr. Day throughout the U.S. Here are a few things you may not know about Martin Luther King Jr. and the holiday. King was most known as a social activist and Baptist minister and played a key role in the American civil rights movement from the mid-1950s until his assassination in April 1968. He is also well known for his iconic “I Have a Dream”, speech that was delivered in front of the Lincoln Memorial for a crowd of 250,000 people during the March on Washington. President Ronald Reagan signed a Bill in 1983, marking the third Monday of every January as Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The bill became the first federal holiday honoring an African American.
