In February the Port Sanilac Lions Club made the decision to take part in the Trex community challenge recycling program. The community challenge recycling program gives an organization six months to collect five hundred pounds of plastic film. With a start date of April 1, the Lions accepted this challenge. The Sanilac County Historic Village and Museum was chosen to be the recipient of the first bench. Posts about the collection were put up on both the Port Sanilac Lions’ and the Museum’s Facebook pages. The response was truly overwhelming; by May 1 the five hundred pounds had been collected. The bench was presented to board members of the Sanilac County Historical Society on July 6, during the “Old Fashioned 4 th of July Celebration” held at the Museum. The Sanilac County Historical Society wants to thank everyone who has dropped plastic into one of the collection boxes, and the Port Sanilac Lions Club for partnering with them to acquire the Trex bench, and especially to Port Sanilac Lions Club president, Cathy Stewart, for all of her hard work in making this happen for both organizations. Both the Museum
and the Lions Club will continue collecting plastic film and encourage the community to help them continue this program in the Port Sanilac area.
