With Christmas right around the corner the St. Cair County Homeland Security and Emergency Management wants county residents to know about e-card scams. E-Cards are a popular form of sending holiday greetings, instead of the old paper card. It’s easy, quick, free and what’s not to like? Scammers also like them because it makes people more likely to click on things they normally wouldn’t. What person wouldn’t want to see an e-card from a secret admirer, or one from their kids, or grandkids? They say be weary of all e-cards. Most scams involve either downloading a virus or having you give them information. There are several legitimate e-card companies from legitimate companies including Hallmark, American Greetings and Amazon. Of course, the question is how can you tell the difference between a legitimate and a scam? Here are a few helpful hints when you should delete the e-card: If you aren’t sure of the sender, If you see any misspelled words, If you have to provide ANY information or if you have “sign-on” using any method.
