Local funeral homes are now honoring veterans and retiring American flags in a new way. Pollock-Randall Funeral Homes has announced a new program arranged with May Memorial Crematory, and local American Legion posts. Veterans transported to May Memorial Crematory from Pollock-Randall, Karrer-Simpson and Marysville Funeral Homes will be transported and cremated draped in a retired American Flag. Given the strict rules for disposing of U.S. flags it has been determined that by placing these retired flags over the bodies of our veterans to be cremated, they can provide a final tribute to both the veteran and the flag. The initial flags for the program have been donated by St. Clair American Legion Post 382 but are open to other Posts and Scout troops to donate. The public may also bring American flags of any size needing to be retired directly to the funeral homes. In return ensure that each and every one of the veterans cremated at May Memorial has a final red, white and blue tribute. Pollock-Randall has also provided additional flags to May Memorial Crematory so that they can drape the remains of veterans brought to them by other smaller Thumb area funeral homes who do not have flag collection programs in their communities.
