The Salvation Army has been providing the Port Huron Fire Department smoke detectors to give to families for free. In fact, the Fire Department will even install them. With the success of the program, another danger that hasn’t been addressed is carbon monoxide detectors. With an older housing stock this is a real danger in the community and every year there are several fire runs for carbon monoxide issues. Carbon monoxide detectors can be more expensive than smoke detectors running at $15-$30 each. So the city manager of Port Huron will be providing low income based families with free carbon monoxide detectors from his own budget.
