As we set the clocks back one hour when daylight saving time ended this weekend the Michigan Fire Marshall Kevin Sehlmeyer is urging residents to also check batteries of smoke alarms. According to the National Fire Protection Association, 71 percent of smoke alarm failures are a result of missing, disconnected, or dead batteries. The state fire marshal along with the NFPA recommend to test smoke alarms monthly by using the test button, replace batteries twice a year before you hear a chirp that indicated low battery, and make sure you have a smoke alarm in every bedroom or sleeping area and have one smoke alarm on every level of your home, including the basement.
